Design Thinking
Design thinking is a human-centered problem-solving approach that drives innovation by deeply understanding customer needs, rapidly prototyping ideas, and iterating based on real-world feedback. This design thinking methodology helps teams develop products, services, processes, and organizations that are not only creative but also practical and impactful.
Unlike traditional problem-solving methods, design thinking prioritizes what people truly want, rather than relying solely on historical data or assumptions. It balances three key factors:
- Desirability: What makes sense to people and for people?
- Feasibility: What is technically possible within the foreseeable future?
- Viability: What is likely to become part of a sustainable business model?
- Responsibility: Is it ethical and does it avoid unintended harm?
Why the Design Thinking Framework is Not a Linear Process
“Design thinking is not a linear path. It’s a big mass of looping back to different places in the process.” —David Kelley, Founder of IDEO
At IDEO U, we teach the design thinking process as six core phases, but in practice, it is an iterative and flexible approach rather than a rigid sequence. The design thinking framework helps teams navigate from problem identification to innovative solutions.
Frame a Question
Define the challenge by focusing on who you are designing for and what problem needs to be solved.
Gather Inspiration
Go out into the world and seek inspiration by observing and discovering what people really need.
Synthesize for Action
Make meaning out of diverse information to identify a strategic focus.
Generate Ideas
Brainstorm innovative solutions that go beyond obvious answers and push the boundaries of creativity.
Make Ideas Tangible
Build rapid prototypes to visualize and test concepts, uncovering what works and what needs improvement.
Test to Learn & Iterate
Refine ideas based on real user feedback, adjusting and improving solutions before final implementation.
Share the Story
Once a strong solution emerges, communicate its impact effectively to stakeholders, clients, or end users.
This design thinking methodology is dynamic. Teams often cycle between phases, testing, and refining ideas until they find the best path forward.
Why Design Thinking is Essential for Innovation
We live in a world of complex, interconnected systems, where the challenges we face are dynamic and human-centered. Design thinking innovation enables organizations to develop creative, practical, and impactful solutions that drive meaningful change.
At IDEO U, we’ve applied design thinking frameworks to some of today’s most pressing challenges:
How can we personalize healthcare to improve patient experiences?
How can design thinking advance education and transform learning?
By embracing the design thinking process, individuals and organizations can unlock new possibilities, reimagine industries, and create human-centered solutions that truly make a difference.
